This is so very true; I myself have to make sure I am intentional about supporting; sharing and encouraging more Black authors. Today I made the very mistake when asked if 3 books to recommend, failed to mention one by a Black author.
Crazy stat. My concentration for my English degree was publishing studies and literature, and there weren’t a lot of us in the program (as students or professors). Sometimes I wonder what could have been if I had gone that route instead of pursuing journalism (my other degree).
I've definitely considered pivoting, or doing both, because it really does break my heart to see Black authors routinely left out. Storytelling is in our blood!
I’m a black author I self published 4 books hoping things will change for black writers where we support each other and have chances to have our works made into movies or tv shows and inspire more black authors to write ✍️
let the Black folks say, AMEN! I am working with Dee Evans and find her to be an attentive and supportive coach. I recently participated in a four week, free webinar series for black women in publishing.
The "Big Five" publishing houses sound as if their entire business model is in much disarray and confusion (sort of like the rest of the world🤦🏽💁🏽)
Your newsletter instantly made me think of an article Zora Neale Hurston published, the title is along the lines of “what white publishers won’t print.” Obviously, we are known to create our own solutions hence your create of Rise2Write.
I hope my Black writer friends and their supporters are aware of this Sub. And, for my reading friends, if you haven't read Black works, you are sorely missing out!
